Before Friday 20th March, I think most people were keeping a keen eye on the news to see just what was happening worldwide with COVID19 and the very scary and real way it seemed to be spreading.
Prior to that time, Preservation Treatments (PTL) had been constantly very busy, having had one of our busiest winter periods ever. We also had a significant pipeline of work with all of our operatives fully booked for a good period of time.
Then, on Monday 23rd March, the news came from the Government that there would be a nationwide lockdown, with stringent restrictions placed on almost all sectors of life. For the safety of our staff and clients, even though we were aware that the UK Government had agreed that certain types of construction sites could remain operational, PTL made the decision to suspend all normal business with immediate effect as from 24th March.
This meant that we then had to contact all clients where work was in progress and all clients who had previously agreed workdates to advise of this suspension of business. Naturally, every one of them fully understood the situation. Our surveyors were also booked with agreed inspections over the forthcoming 3 weeks. Every one of those clients, or potential clients was also contacted and advised that we would be in contact again, once we knew when we could resume normal working practices.
During this period of suspension, where staff have been furloughed, our website and main contact number have remained in operation. A very limited number of people have tried to deal with certain issues which have arisen and answer questions raised by clients.
That day, on 23rd March, suddenly seems a long time away and we, along with most others in the country, are coming towards the end of the 6th week of lockdown. It has been a very strange, and unprecedented time for most of us but! the objective seems to be working, for which we must all be thankful.
Although we all want to get back to normality – whatever that really is – it is important that we adhere to Government guidelines and instructions so that we get through this very difficult period and do not have to go through it again.
In the hope that certain restrictions will start to be lifted, PTL are at the stage now of planning how to re-open for normal business post-lockdown.
We know that we can operate on certain sites, although domestic type work may not be possible for a while yet.
Even though we are able to get back on to certain construction sites, or refurbishment jobs, this is dependent on a number of things, which include:
• Making contact with clients where work had previously been booked in to be sure we are able to work on specific jobs / sites
• The ability to get deliveries to site in a timely fashion
• The site we will be working on adhering to social distancing
• The need to ensure certain staffing levels in our operational office
• The need for our surveyors to carry out site visits
• Amending our risk assessments to include stipulations in respect of COVID19
• Making sure we have the right people available to undertake specific types of work
• Working within the guidelines as stated by the Government in their next review
• Being sure that wherever our staff do work, be that office staff, surveyors or operational staff, that they will remain safe and that clients they see will also be safe
This next phase – the post COVID19 back to work phase – is not going to be straightforward and will need management and planning. At PTL, we have a very experienced administration team, who will do everything possible to ensure the next phase goes as smoothly as possible for everybody.
Where appropriate, we would also be pleased to arrange consultation calls, or video calls with prospective clients to discuss any issues they may have with damp, timber or waterproofing.
Hopefully, this gives an insight into the last couple of months and the way forward. Please do not hesitate to contact us via the website, or on 01276 66466, where we will do our best to answer any queries before we become fully operational again.
This has been a very difficult and testing period for everybody but together, doing the right thing and working within the guidelines and instructions given to us, we will get through it.
Take care and stay safe.
